01 — The Craft

Documentary cinematography, the human way.

I'm Chris Moreland — a documentary cinematographer and director working out of Chattanooga, Tennessee. I make films about people who did the thing everyone said couldn't be done: Olympic gold medalists, Spartan champions, tabletop gamers, motorcycle clubs, and the quietly extraordinary humans most cameras walk right past.

The work is documentary at its core, but the craft is older than the label. Before I ever roll a camera, I sit down with the subject — sometimes over a meal, sometimes over a long, aimless phone call — and I listen. The goal isn't to extract a quote. It's to build enough trust that, by the time the red light is on, the person across from me has forgotten it's there. Everything I shoot is in service of that first, honest conversation.

Technically, I work in 4K on full-frame cinema glass, lighting for high contrast and skin that reads like skin. I shoot interviews, documentary features, and aerial cinematography — the latter fully FAA-certified and flown across the Tennessee Valley and beyond. But gear is the boring part. The interesting part is how a slow push-in, a held silence, or a single over-the-shoulder frame can make a stranger feel like a friend. That's the whole job.

Whether you're a brand looking for a campaign that doesn't feel like one, an athlete with a story nobody's told right, or a team that needs a media library worth keeping for a decade, the approach doesn't change. I point the camera at the person and get out of the way.

Interview-First

Every film I make starts with a real conversation, not a shot list. We share a meal, we talk, and we wait until the camera becomes the least interesting thing in the room. That's when people tell you the truth.

Cinema-Grade Imagery

Full-frame bodies, cinema glass, lighting built for contrast — shallow depth, deep shadow, and the range to hold it whether the subject's at a podcast table or on a mountainside.

Human, Not Corporate

I make films about people, not brands. Even when a brand is paying, the story belongs to the human at the center of it — that's why the work lands.

Chattanooga & Beyond

Based in Chattanooga, Tennessee, I travel wherever the story takes me — from the Tennessee Valley to Bavarian castles to the Pacific Northwest.
